Version 2b of an Sweet Melons List.
The excel format list provides information on over 900 varieties. Last updated in Jan 2022.
Melons may be grouped by “type”, although this is a vague assignment in some cases. Types include: Ananas, Asian, Bitter, Canary, Cantaloupe, Casaba, Charentais, Crenshaw, Crisp, Honeydew, Muskmelon, Piel de Sapo, etc.

At the bottom of the page, you can see a comparison of the most recent classification by Pitrat (2017)* along side a molecular phylogeny by Moing et al. (2020)*. I have found this incredibly useful to try and understand how all these different melons are related. Because phylogenetics uses bifurcating trees to show relationships, it does not adequately depict recent introgression (cross-breeding) events which would be better served by network analysis, but it is a great place to start. Now on to the growing and tasting!!!!
Don’t know enough about varieties to place several into Pitrat’s classification system…..
